Xena's Whip

Ive always wanted to make this entry, why? Xena's whip has been always one of my favourite props from the Warrior Princess.

Xena uses her whip in several episodes during all the series. One of the more recognizables episodes was "The Price" from season two. "Devi" from season 4.The funny moment when Gabrielle makes an exchange with Minya for a frying pan in "A day in a life", season two. Or when Gabrielle wraps it arround her waist in "The black wolf" from season 1.

2x20 - Xena stretches the whip to dodge an ax from the Hordes, great moment!

The original whip was made of leather, a metal haddle with paua shells inlay and was wrapped with a black leather strap. During the production some whips were made of foam or resin. It is a awesome craftman work with plenty of ornament details.

Creation Entertainment decided to produce this great prop in a Limited Edition of 15 whips worldwide. The first 15 whips had the number written, however, the demand was a bit stronger and decided to make a few more, but not more than 50, although the total number is still unknown it is known that are a very reduced number.

My Xena Creation Entertainment Whip #16/unknown number.

A close-up to the haddle details with paua shells inlays and side ornament.

Another photo of the whip

As well as I've been collecting screencaps from the several episodes where the whip is seen Ive found some interesting pictures.

1x11 - The Black wolf, Gabrielle wears the whip around her stomach to help her friend who is in jail. And if you get closer to the second picture you will see that the whip doesnt have the paua shells inlay that used to had,
maybe because they came off the whip before or was just a mistake of the production or wardrobe team.

1x12 - Beware greeks bearing gifts. Xena holds her whip in the chakram hook. Do you know that in this episode Xena leather costume had two hooks on each side of the hip, one to hold the chakram and the other for the whip.

4x14 - Devi. Again Xena stretches the whip to fight against Tataka demon. I think in this episode Xena used a foam whip.

4x20 - Endgame, Xena carries the whip before fighting with the roman army.

The Xena dress

First sorry for the delay. Ive been very busy these lastest weeks and finally today I get time to update the blog.

Today, I bring to you some close up photographs of the Xena costume dress prop replica made of the american propmaster called Todd Coyle. Also, I would speak about the history of this dress and the evolution of the production of it.

Complete Xena leather costume

This is a never worn leather dress made 16 years ago in 2002. The quality of this costume is awesome, fully detailed and very well made. Ive bought a few months ago on eBay from a seller who took great care of it during all these years. The seller has always been very kind to me and it is not the first item that I have bought from her.

It is made up of two different parts, the leather corset that include the chakram hook and the resin medallion. The skirt is composed of several leather strips with 9 rivets per strip and behind of them two rows of wide leather strips. Also, to simulate Xenas brilliant grey undies, Todds decided to add in the inner part some wide fabric strips as the ones in the original undies from Xena costume.

Medallion detail close up

Since the tv series started Todds Costumes had created these kind of Xena costume using some original screenused costumes he got on his hands. Therefore, the proportions and sizes of each piece are identical to the original

His earlier work was a raw leather design of it with some small mistakes that after he modified them and got a realistic costume like Xena has. My costume is one of those, it is made of a genuine heavy dark reddish brown leather with the characteristic medallion of the warrior princess made of flexible resin.

Corset close up

Nowadays, I was told about his recent work and we dont know exactly why, but the quality has become deficient and the final result has varied a lot in relation to his beginnings. The leather used isnt the same quality and the thickness is smaller than the ones made years ago and the leather cut isnt as accurate as before. However, Im sure it will become again a great propmaster as he was known arround the world.

Talking about Xena's Greaves

The Xena's Greaves/Kneepads/Kneeguards are one of my favourite Xena's costume piece. It's highly detailed with different sizes of rivets, and a dragon claws shape around.

Comparing Xena's Original screen-used greaves photo from the Te Papa Museum in New Zealand and the replicas from Todd's Costumes, I have observed that they almost look alike. Both, the screen-used and Todd's replica is made of leather and rivets are placed in the same way. Here it's a comparision:

In my opinion, first, Todd's greaves replicas are made with a light brown leather and the original ones is darker. When I've received my Xena greaves I've worked carefully to find the same painting for the dragon claws details and I tried to paint it in the same way as the original. I think finally Ive got a good result!! Also, the dragon claws shape has minimal differences bewteen the screen-used and the replica, the ones in the Todd's replica are bigger and are closer together than the shape from the screen-used one. However, in my opinion, is one of the best works Todd Coyle ever made.

Xena's Greaves Front. Here is a clear photo to see how the Todds replicas look. I think they look absolutely incredible.

Xena Greaves Back. I wanted to show the back part because we have always seen the front part but is less common to see the back part. I have to admit that Ive sewn to the leather pieces a real sport black knee pads to get a greater resemblance to the original Xena Knee Greaves.

I want to share some photographs where the kneepads can be seen worn by Lucy Lawless.

Xena wearing her Knee guards in "A Family Affair" from season 4.

Xena fighting wearing her knee greaves.

Xena during the first season in the episode "Beware Greeks bearing Gifts"

Next blog entry will talk about Gabrielle season 6 costume. Hope you like it!

Gabrielle's Original Battle Staff Prop

Today, I bring some amazing photos of my Gabrielle's battle staff prop. This is made of wood, rope, leather, woven fabric and deerskin? Maybe. Not completely sure.

Since years I've been looking for a Gabrielle's staff, first I was looking for a Creation Ent replica, however, finally I found a Gabrielle's original set-used staff prop. It came from a well-know australian Xena cosplayer, called Kelly Xena. She told me she bought from a second-hand webpage.

I share some photos.

In my point of view, the most interesting part is the middle section with the woven fabric and old rope.

Also, the hairskin and leather section looks gorgeous!

The staff.

Hope you've enjoyed yourself. See you soon!
