Xena Authentic Coffin piece

Today, I bring some news. One of my lastest adquisition is a piece of the Xena coffin used in the episode "The Quest" from season 2.

Xena died in "Destiny". She was brutally beaten with a tree trunk causing an internal spill.

When Xena died in "Destiny", Gabrielle decided to bring Xena's body back to Amphipolis with her brother, Lyceus. The coffin can be seen during the episode in plenty of times.

Xena's coffin was auctioned off once the series ended and the original buyer choose to cut up the coffin and sell off the pieces arround the world to international collectors.

The coffin being far to large to ship and store for most collectors. It was made from a combination of plywood, foam, varnish, paint and circular paua shell. The paua shells was a way to identify Xena's props. All her weapons and saddle bag have paua shells inlays.

The piece Ive adquired is a big one, probably the biggest one Ive ever seen. Ive been studying for a while the lid of the coffin and comparing it with some screencaps, and I realized that this piece belongs to the lower part of the lid where Xena placed her feet.

It is made of plywood with foam resin flower design which is filled in with hard plaster on the edges. The whole coffin was painted in brown tones.

Hope you've enjoy it! See you soon.

Xena Authentic Complete Costume (Part 1)

Hi guys,

Today I bring good news! These previous weeks Ive adquired a complete Xena Costume from the Omarama Gallery, Totara Peak Gallery, in New Zealand. The costume includes a complete Xena leather costume with an original medallion and chakram hook, breastplate, shoulder guards, backplate, a pair of xena gaunlets and armbands, a pair of kneepads and boots.

As you can see the complete costume looks amazing in the mannequin, Im still looking for a complete mannequin with legs, it will come soon, I hope. We start! are you ready?

Xena Leather Costume / Leathers: It is made of genuine dark leather, I imagine this costume was made in the lastest seasons because of the colour of the leather used. In the early seasons Xena costume was brown/ reddish dark brown and in season 5 she reappeared with a costume in darker shade in the episode "Amphipolis under Siege" and the whole season 6. The medallion is made out of a heavy resin and the chakram hook is strong metal hook covered with leather and its attached to the costume with a leather strip. In addition, the costume has a metallic-looking fabric that is under the leather skirt. It looks amazing!

Xena Breastplate: Quite different than the Todds replica, is bigger and the middle part of the breast is covered with leather and painted in copper tones, the breastplate made by Todds has that part made of resin and painted in black. It is made of moduled plastic, in the series they've made plenty of breastplates in different materials: metal (cooper), other alloy metal, and resin and plastic for the ones used by doubles to to avoid damage in stunts or fight scenes. It has an ultra realistic finish in cooper tones, in both sides has a leather strap so that the breastplate can be held easily.

Xena Backplate: Same as the breastplate, ultra realistic finish in cooper tones, made out of moduled plastic. It is slightly curved inwards to adapt correctly to the shape of the back and has four leather straps so it can be held easily in the right place.

Xena Shoulder Guards: The shoulder guards are made of heavy leather like the one used for the gaunlets and armbands and the armour is moduled plastic with an ultra realistic finish.

Xena Gaunlets: These gaunlets were sold by Creation Entertainment and were made by the propmasters from the tv series. This ones are my favourites, they are made of genuine dark brown leather and real cooper. They have many old gold rivets and eyelets to adjust them to anybody. Although, it is Lucy Lawless size and they looks amazing in the mannequin, however, they are quite different than Todds gaunlets replica.

Xena Armbands: These armbands were sold by Creation Entertainment and were made by the propmasters from the tv series. As the gaunlets, these are highly detailed, very well done and made out of leather and real cooper. They have nothing to envy to the Todds replicas.

Because of this costume was adquired just a week ago, Im still taking some pictures of all the accesories and details. For the moment, I end up the entry and as soon Ive got some pictures from the kneeguards and boots I will be back here again. Best wishes, hope you enjoy your time with this post.

Xena's Whip

Ive always wanted to make this entry, why? Xena's whip has been always one of my favourite props from the Warrior Princess.

Xena uses her whip in several episodes during all the series. One of the more recognizables episodes was "The Price" from season two. "Devi" from season 4.The funny moment when Gabrielle makes an exchange with Minya for a frying pan in "A day in a life", season two. Or when Gabrielle wraps it arround her waist in "The black wolf" from season 1.

2x20 - Xena stretches the whip to dodge an ax from the Hordes, great moment!

The original whip was made of leather, a metal haddle with paua shells inlay and was wrapped with a black leather strap. During the production some whips were made of foam or resin. It is a awesome craftman work with plenty of ornament details.

Creation Entertainment decided to produce this great prop in a Limited Edition of 15 whips worldwide. The first 15 whips had the number written, however, the demand was a bit stronger and decided to make a few more, but not more than 50, although the total number is still unknown it is known that are a very reduced number.

My Xena Creation Entertainment Whip #16/unknown number.

A close-up to the haddle details with paua shells inlays and side ornament.

Close-up of the pommel.

Another photo of the whip

As well as I've been collecting screencaps from the several episodes where the whip is seen Ive found some interesting pictures.

1x11 - The Black wolf, Gabrielle wears the whip around her stomach to help her friend who is in jail. And if you get closer to the second picture you will see that the whip doesnt have the paua shells inlay that used to had,
maybe because they came off the whip before or was just a mistake of the production or wardrobe team.

1x12 - Beware greeks bearing gifts. Xena holds her whip in the chakram hook. Do you know that in this episode Xena leather costume had two hooks on each side of the hip, one to hold the chakram and the other for the whip.

4x14 - Devi. Again Xena stretches the whip to fight against Tataka demon. I think in this episode Xena used a foam whip.

4x20 - Endgame, Xena carries the whip before fighting with the roman army.

The Xena dress

First sorry for the delay. Ive been very busy these lastest weeks and finally today I get time to update the blog.

Today, I bring to you some close up photographs of the Xena costume dress prop replica made of the american propmaster called Todd Coyle. Also, I would speak about the history of this dress and the evolution of the production of it.

Complete Xena leather costume

This is a never worn leather dress made 16 years ago in 2002. The quality of this costume is awesome, fully detailed and very well made. Ive bought a few months ago on eBay from a seller who took great care of it during all these years. The seller has always been very kind to me and it is not the first item that I have bought from her.

It is made up of two different parts, the leather corset that include the chakram hook and the resin medallion. The skirt is composed of several leather strips with 9 rivets per strip and behind of them two rows of wide leather strips. Also, to simulate Xenas brilliant grey undies, Todds decided to add in the inner part some wide fabric strips as the ones in the original undies from Xena costume.

Medallion detail close up

Since the tv series started Todds Costumes had created these kind of Xena costume using some original screenused costumes he got on his hands. Therefore, the proportions and sizes of each piece are identical to the original

His earlier work was a raw leather design of it with some small mistakes that after he modified them and got a realistic costume like Xena has. My costume is one of those, it is made of a genuine heavy dark reddish brown leather with the characteristic medallion of the warrior princess made of flexible resin.

Corset close up

Nowadays, I was told about his recent work and we dont know exactly why, but the quality has become deficient and the final result has varied a lot in relation to his beginnings. The leather used isnt the same quality and the thickness is smaller than the ones made years ago and the leather cut isnt as accurate as before. However, Im sure it will become again a great propmaster as he was known arround the world.
